SOME OPTIMISM FOR SWINE OUTBREAK

Swine flu has become widespread in the United States, with cases in 30 states and more expected to turn up in other states in the next few days, federal health officials reported on Sunday. The World Health Organization has reported that they are now optimistic the pandemic will die down soon.

Dr. Anne Schuchat, Deputy Director for Science and Public Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says, “The virus has arrived, I would say, in most of the country now.”

Most cases have been mild, but 30 people have been hospitalized. And the disease, unlike the common types of seasonal flu, appears to strike an unusually high percentage of young people. The median age of people who fall ill is seventeen.

Janet Napolitano, Homeland Security Secretary says, “Level 6, which they very well could go to this week, all that means is that it is widespread around the world.”

Airport Passengers arriving from affected areas this week have been filling questionnaires about possible virus symptoms, and cabin crews have been supplied with gloves and masks in an effort to isolate suspected cases.

In the United States, Ms. Napolitano and other top officials appeared on no fewer than five morning television programs. They emphasized that since its deadly initial spread in Mexico, the disease had generally shown a milder face.

MEXICO FLU OUTBREAK

In recent weeks, Mexican officials are scrambling to control a swine flu outbreak which has killed as least 16 people and possibly even more. Universities and K-12 schools across the nation are urging people to stay home.

Jose Angel Cordova, Health Minister said, “We’re dealing with a new flu virus that constitutes a respiratory epidemic that so far is controllable.”

The World Health Organization reported about eight-hundred cases of flu-like symptoms in recent weeks. Most of them are among healthy young adults, with 57 deaths in Mexico City and three in the central part of the country.

Dr. Anne Schuchat, Director of Respiratory Diseases for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said, “We don’t yet know the extent of the problem,” she continues, “but we don’t think this is a time for major concern.”

Officials at the public health agency in Canada said their Mexican counterparts hard warned them this week of a “relatively high” fatality rate for people in Mexico. Many of which had respiratory illness this season, some of whom who tested positive for the flu.

The United States flu season is tailing off now. It has been relatively mild. Dr. Cox of the disease control center said officials do not know whether the flu shot this year would protect against the new swine strain.

COLUMBINE 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Yesterday marked the ten year anniversary of the Columbine shootings, where two students, Eric Harris and Dyland Klebold, murdered 13 of their fellow peers and teachers. New evidence has been presented that suggest the killers were not the ones who were being bullied but the ones dishing it out.

Dave Cullen, author of Columbine says, “He was so bad at wiring those bombs, apparently they weren’t even close to working.”

A decade after Klebold and Harris committed  this unthinkable crime, new information surfaced about the tragedy through diaries, e-mails, videotape, appointment books, and police affidavits. Witnesses, friends, and survivors say that much of what the media reported was actually false.

Peter Langman, author of Why Kids Kill says, “These are not ordinary kids who played too many video games. These are not ordinary kids who just wanted to be famous. These are simply not ordinary kids. These are kids with serious psychological problems .”

After the incident at Columbine, The U.S. Secret Service and the U.S. Department of Education soon began studying school shooters. In 2002, researchers presented their findings: School shooters, they said, followed no set profile, but most were depressed and felt persecuted.

Columbine wasn’t the first K-12 shooting, though at the time it was by far the worst, and the biggest to play out largely on television. Years later, another student at Virginia Tech felt the need to murder 32 people at his school.
